Famous Amos Creator Wally Amos Dies

Wally Amos, the creator of the Famous Amos cookie empire, has died at the age of 84.

Amos' children said he died Tuesday at his home in Honolulu.

Amos was born in Gulfport, Mississippi, in 1934. He started baking cookies as a child, and he later sold them to his friends and neighbors.

In 1975, Amos opened his first Famous Amos store in Los Angeles. The store was a success, and Amos soon began franchising the business. By the early 1980s, there were more than 1,000 Famous Amos stores in the United States.

Amos sold the Famous Amos company in 1989, but he continued to be involved in the business. He also became a children's literacy advocate, and he wrote several books for children.
