When 29-year-old London stockbroker Nicholas Winton visited Czechoslovakia in 1938, just weeks after the Munich Agreement was signed, he witnessed firsthand the plight of Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi persecution. Moved by their desperation, Winton vowed to help.
"One Life," a 2023 biographical drama, tells the inspiring story of Winton's extraordinary efforts. With the support of his friend Trevor Chadwick, Winton established a network to rescue Jewish children from Czechoslovakia and bring them to safety in Britain.
Over the course of nine months, Winton organized eight trains, transporting over 660 children to London. He kept his mission secret, fearing it would jeopardize the children's safety. It was not until decades later that Winton's astonishing act of heroism was revealed.
The film, directed by James Hawes, stars Anthony Hopkins as the elderly Winton, Johnny Flynn as the young stockbroker, and Lena Olin as his wife, Grete. The cast also includes Helena Bonham Carter and Sir Ben Kingsley.
